Laurence Shaw
(1966-1972) died 09/01/2014
aged 61. His wife Keren writes:
“After Merchant Taylors’, Laurence
attended St Bartholomew’s Medical
School graduating in 1978. He
specialised in Obstetrics and
Gynaecology, subspecialising in
Fertility. He trained with Robert
Winston prior to his appointment
as NHS Consultant in East Kent.
Leaving the NHS in 2006, he
developed his own private unit in
affiliation with The Bridge Centre to
allow him to escape the restrictions
imposed on fertility patients by the
limited funds of the NHS.
He developed a fascination with
anthropology and lectured and wrote
papers about the anthropology of the
menopause and the survival advantages
of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
Laurence was a keen runner until
just before he died and at 40, ran the
Amsterdam Marathon in under 3 hours.
Good food, good wine and good company
were passions, as was Tottenham Hotspur
football team.
With his wife, Keren, also a doctor, and
children, Sebastian, Zoe and Tanya he
travelled widely, visiting much of Europe,
North America, Africa, and India.
Laurence was a hugely committed
doctor, often interviewed about current
fertility issues in the national press and
media. He was a wonderful teacher and
communicator, innovator and leader. He
was always kind and caring and had a
wonderful sense of humour.
Keren and Laurence attended two
Merchant Taylors’ reunions in recent
years. He always spoke fondly of his
schoolboy years and felt a great loyalty
and gratitude to his school.
Grateful patients and colleagues have
paid many wonderful tributes. We, his
family, feel so lucky to have had Laurence
in our lives. His was so cruelly cut short
and we all miss him desperately.”
