Tales FromSandy Lodge
Mr Beech
encouraged many to achieve
excellent dovetail and mortice and tenon
joints and produce some beautiful bowls
and table lamps on the school lathes.
With my friend David Hood and
others we produced a beautiful mahogany
box which I believe is in the Merchant
Taylors’ Hall.
Mr McKnight was Mr Beech’s right
hand man who spent a lot of time
preparing wood for the form members to
work on. There was an occasion when one
of the boys went to the store and selected
some fine mahogany for some table legs.
The grain of the wood should always run
down the leg but he cut it with the grain
going across which means the legs would
easily snap through.
Mr Beech was furious! He called the boy
over and in front of the class and pointed
out the silly mistake, embarrassing the
boy and telling him ‘This is a total waste
of money, wood doesn’t grow on trees
you know!’ There was a sudden silence
followed by a huge blast of laughter not
only from the boys but also Mr Beech.
Mr Beech was an all-time great for me
and I was very blessed by his teaching. He
was a ‘legend’.

OMT speakers
Varun Paul (1998-2003)
returned to Sandy Lodge in
January to deliver a lecture
to the Lower Sixth boys on
‘OMTs in the City’. Varun is
currently an economist at
the Bank of England and the
boys enjoyed hearing Varun
talk on the intellectual and
professional satisfactions of
a career in the City.
